A vintage Indian Pichwai Painting of the deity Krishna as Shrinathji from the temple town of Nathdwara. A particularly iconic motif from nearby Udaipur.
Large, 100 cms X 68 cms. Gouache on canvas, framed in silk. Nathdwara, some 50 kms from Udaipur, is a holy town famous for its temple which houses the original icon of the deity Shrinathji, a 14th c.
7 year old infant incarnation of Krishna. Historically, the icon of Shrinathji was worshipped at Govardhan hill, near Mathura, but in 1672 A.
It was moved to safeguard it from the clutches of the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb. On reaching the village of Sinhad in Mewar, the wheels of the chariot transporting the icon sank deep into the mud and could be moved no further.
The icon, consequently, was installed in a temple town we now know to be in Nathdwara. This particularly beautiful depiction of Shrinathji has been painted in gouache on canvas, framed in silk and dates to the second half of the 20th c. As a motif, it's particularly popular in nearby Udaipur and displayed in many hotel receptions. We sourced this artefact personally from a reputable dealer in Udaipur.
