Vintage Indo-Persian Indian Silver Plated Niello Box ELEPHANT HUNT Horses Tigers

  

For sale is this lovely vintage Indo-persian silverplated on brass box featuring an elephant hunt on top of the box. Four horsemen with spears are attacking a bull elephant which has trampled one of the hunters. The decoration is very fine and has been picked out with'niello' to highlight the pattern. The four sides of the box consist of beasts of the hunt in a frieze.

The interior of the box has wood line for cigarettes or playing cards. I would estimate the box was made in the first half of the 20th century, probably in Northern India. It measures about 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches by about 1 inch tall. It weighs a total of 337 grams. The box is in fairly good condition some of the brass showing through, especially on the underside of the box. Minor scratching and wear throughout.
