Vintage Indian Reverse Glass Painting. Hindu Deity Rama, Heavily Bejewelled    Vintage Indian Reverse Glass Painting. Hindu Deity Rama, Heavily Bejewelled

A large Indian Reverse Glass Painting, in authentic Art Deco period frame. The much idolised Hindu deity Lord Rama heavily adorned with jewels and gilded silk brocade. One of the more highly detailed, larger examples of the genre. SEE IMAGES 4 & 6.

Depicted in this delightfully evocative. Is the highly revered Hindu deity, Rama, the embodiment of chivalry and virtue and one of the ten avatars or incarnations of Vishnu. Rama is the oldest deity worshipped in human form and shares blue skin with that other human avatar Lord Krishna and, of course, Vishnu.

Presented here sporting his golden ceremonial bow and arrow, he is suitably embellished in gilded silk brocade, dripping in exquisite jewels. This is an example of Indian reverse glass.

Painting at its most detailed, vibrant best, its authentic Art Deco period frame finished in distressed chocolate. It's very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt, Indian miniatures used as inspiration. Tradition, an engraving is laid down on the back of the glass before water or gum arabic paints are applied. This is then fired in a kiln ensuring the paint bonds permanently with the glass. Known as reverse glass painting for obvious reasons, they are noted for their sheer brilliance, stunning clarity, stunning colours and liberal use of gilding, as here.

Indian glass paintings celebrate all things Indian in their choice of subject matter. Familiar themes being portraits of popular deities, as here, as well as mythological figures, epic themes, icons, and both ornamental and botanical themes from nature. Other reverse glass paintings are available from lacewing-interiors. See last two images for examples, and separate listings. WILL BE DISPATCHED ENCASED IN POLYSTYRENE FOR PROTECTION.
