One of a pair, the second of another Hindu deity, Krishna available in a separate listing. This substantial antique, a highly decorated framed door, started life Rajasthan. One of a pair featuring reverse glass paintings of much revered Hindu deities, reclaimed from architectural salvage, made from the tropical hardwood teak and recently re-purposed with the addition of a mirror to the rear, it makes a great decorative statement. In a previous incarnation, it would have graced the walls of a grand early 20th c. Haveli, a wealthy merchant's mansion. Depicted in this delightfully evocative.Is the highly revered Hindu goddess, Durga, also know as Shakti or Devi. She is protector of all that is good and harmonious in the world and, seated on her vahana, or vehicle , a tiger, the multi-limbed Durga battles the forces of evil in the world. This is an example of Indian reverse glass.
Its authentic Art Deco period frame finished in distressed. Viridian green with silver detailing. It's very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt. Tradition, an engraving is laid down on the back of the glass before water or gum arabic paints are applied.This is then fired in a kiln ensuring the paint bonds permanently with the glass. Known as reverse glass painting for obvious reasons, they are noted for their sheer brilliance, stunning clarity, stunning colours and liberal use of gilding , as here. A pair of Art Deco framed doors from the same architecturally salvaged project. The second features the much revered Hindu. Deity, Krishna in Vrindavan, Mathura.
Recently reglazed, wooden surface lightly waxed. Substantial metal hanging hooks to rear, retains original door furniture.
