Vintage Indian Reverse Glass & Bead Painting. Krishna, Cow & Calf. Surabhi  Vintage Indian Reverse Glass & Bead Painting. Krishna, Cow & Calf. Surabhi
A wonderful vintage Indian bead & glass painting. Ornately decorated sacred cow and calf with Krishna, the long enduring Hindu motif, Surabhi. Presented in its original dark grey and white vintage Art Deco period, hardwood frame, with raised incised wave finished surface. Depicted in the this delightful vintage Indian bead & glass painting is a much loved, perenial Hindu motif, the sacred cow suckling her calf known as Surabhi. This bovine-goddess is described in Hinduism as the mother of all cows.

She is a miraculous cow of plenty who provides her owner with whatever he or she desires, and is often portrayed as the mother of other cattle, as here. Hindus revere and venerate cows in their millions. Indeed, Hinduism raises the status of Mother here to the level of Goddess, and is considered sacred providing, as it does, life sustaining milk, an enduring symbol of the divine bounty of earth. A substantial part of the Krishna legend is associated with cows, cowherds and pastoral life in general in Vrindavan, images of Krishna frolicking amongst the gopis, or milkmaids, familiar to all.

Krishna is seen here top right. Bead and glass painting is an age-old Indian tradition, in which part of the image is first crafted in strung glass beads, before the framed glass is overpainted to complete the image.

This example is presented in its original dark grey and white, Art Deco period frame. We s have other versions of Surabhi bead and reverse glass paintings for sale, as well as other motifs such as Indian birdlife. WILL BE DISPATCHED PROTECTED IN POLYSTYRENE.
