A vintage Indian tropical hardwood box sourced from Rajasthan. Decorated in a typical Bikaner School of Painting colour palette of distressed red, saffron, maroon, green and white.
Would make a pretty addition to a dressing table as a jewellery box. This beautifully decorated Indian tropical hardwood box has been recently sourced from Rajasthan. Rajasthan, of course, covers an enormous area and was dotted with many Kingdoms. Mewar, Marwar, Bikaner, Bundi, Kota, Kishangarh, Jaisalmer, Sirohi and Amber/Jaipur amongst them. Each with a rich heritage of painting activity. The decoration of this box is typical of the Bikaner School of Painting, its colour palette and design motifs passed on from generation to generation of painters down through the centuries. Such is the construction and relative condition of the box, we would suggests it dates to early to mid 20th century. Originally it was probably used to store small valuable items. We have presented it here suggesting its suitability as a jewellery box, though you of course may have other ideas. A second companion painted Rajasthani box is available in a separate listing. Both rare artefacts from that enchanting place that is Rajasthan's Thar desert. Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description.
