Large, vintage Nepalese, Buddhist temple frieze. Eight Auspicious Symbols of Good Fortune motif. Sacred dark vermillion background framed in dark chocolate. HORIZONTAL EXAMPLES AVAILABLE IN SEPARATE LISTINGS. Has been sourced from Kathmandu in Nepal, and certainly has some age on its side. Collectively, the white parasal, two fishes, Sankha, Dhjava, Srivatsa, Kalasa, Padma and Chamaru are called Astamangal or The eight Auspicious and glorious emblems. Each of deep religious significance to followers of Buddhism. Often on show together, as here, or singularly, they are frequent. Decorative motifs depicted in stone, wood, metal and paint. They are believed to represent gifts given by celestial beings to Sakyamuni on his attainment of Enlightenment of Buddhahood. Nothing over 100 yrs is allowed to be exported from Nepal, and whilst we wouldn't claim this frieze to be antique, it certainly has some age on its side, and has been produced in a time-honoured fashion using skills handed down from generation to generation of Nepalese craftsmen. The very act of religious painting being an act of devotion in itself.

In a similar vein, we have sourced three freizes decorated with the most potent of all mantras, the OM mantra. All available in separate lacewing-interiors listings. All unique artefacts from the. Please look carefully at the photographs as they form part of the description. This listing is for the one Nepalese painted frieze in the lead image.
