A large upright, vintage Nepalese domestic shrine or altar. A serene, hand-carved Buddha head central to the design as well as various Buddha motifs, ceremonial lions and a wrathful multi-armed Buddhist deity. This exquisite, hand-carved sacred shrine or altar in a compressed tropical Indian hardwood, has been sourced from Kathmandu in Nepal, though may well be Tibetan. A large distinctive Buddha head motif is central to its design, as are Buddhas of varying sizes, a w. Multi-armed deity, ceremonial lions, an elephant and a ghee lamp to the centre of the lower platform.
Buddha depicted here does not wear a crown, the massive protuberance to the pinnacle of the cranium referred to as ushnisa, the receptacle of the divine mind, or mana. The various Buddhas adorning the back of the shine display the Bhusparsa Mudra, the earth touching gesture, calling the earth for witness. At the pinnacle of the rear panel, is a multi. There is demonstrable age to this shrine, with remnants of sacred red and saffron tikka powders from previous ritual worship.Have been hand-modelled in clay before being added to the shrine which dates back to the second half of of the twentieth century.
