Royalty, as a prince he was. Raised in opulence in a palace built exclusively for him and sheltered from knowledge of religion and human hardship. The prince reached his late 20s with little experience of the outside world, until one day he ventured out beyond the palace walls and was quickly confronted with the realities of human frailty.
Overcome by these sights, the very next day at age 29, the prince left his kingdom, wife and son to lead an ascetic life. He was to determine a way to relieve the universal suffering that he now understood to be one of the defining traits of humanity. He embarked on a personal journey that was destined to not only transform his view of raising above the human condition, but that of millions since.
