This particularly pretty, old Indian reverse glass painting. Features Durga, the wrathful form of Shiva's consort, Parvati. She is shown seated astride her mount, a tiger, holding amongst other things, a sword, a club, a trishula and a lotus flower.
As always, her face remains calm and gentle. G lass painting is very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt, Indian miniatures being used as inspiration. Tradition, a painting or engraving laid down on the back of the glass is known as a reverse glass painting for obvious reasons.
