This beautifully executed miniature painting features a Mughal ruler, probably a Maharaja, contemplating a single flower, a pose associated with perhaps the greatest Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan. It's symbolises the individual involved is both highly educated and of superior breeding. Set off against a dark teal painted ground, it's very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of miniature painters recreate images that have gone before as inspiration.
