Sculptured horse head, fabulous patina aged and cracked due to exposure to harsh sunlight, left in its original state, hand carved in teak. Sourced from Jaipur in Rajasthan, these highly decorative Mewar horse heads started life as a matching pair either side of a doorway in a haveli, or merchant's mansion, (see photograph 12) circa 1850.
Traditionally horse heads were fixed to exterior door posts to ward off evil spirits and offer protection. It has been left in an. Condition and is ready to fit, it has a small fixing bracket attached to the top of the back. 310mm high x 140mm deep x 80mm thick, it weighs 0.95kgs.
