Antique Vintage Indian Wooden Furniture. Traditional Tribal Pidha Low Chair

  
A rare Indian P idha tribal chair with exotic elephant motif back panel. Folding version with hinged back for ease of transportation by a nomad through the Thar desert. It's a strange world we find ourselves in. We've not been able to source these antique tribal pidha chairs for at least a couple of years. Then, low and behold, three come along at once. They come to us from the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, and date back to the early 20th c. They are the hinged version of the genre, no doubt having swayed gently from side to side on the back of a tribal nomad's camel in decades previous. Tribal pidha chairs with their original sisal rope webbing still in tact, and displaying a lovely aged patina to the turned and carved wooden surfaces. Traditionally, pidhas were used as a low chair in the desert, and are still really comfortable as an occassional chair.

Here in the West, they often resurface in various other guises, As an impromptu magazine rack or coffee table, perhaps even as a dog or cat basket. They also look the part with the addition of a traditional Rajasthani embroidered cushion still be made by tribal women. SEE IMAGES 2 & 11 FOR EXAMPLES.
