A larger antique / vintage Indian teak storage box. Finished in a typical Rajput painting colour palette, distressed red, brown, pink, black, blue, saffron, maroon and white. Beautifully decorated panels depicting a bejewelled Royal couple contemplating a flower, and tiger motifs. A substantial decorator's piece. Storage box has been sourced from Rajasthan, its style of painting typifying Rajput painting down through the centuries. Rajasthan, of course, covers an enormous area and was dotted with many Kingdoms. Mewar, Marwar, Bikaner, Bundi, Kota, Kishangarh, Jaisalmer, Sirohi and Amber/Jaipur amongst them. Large, some small, but each with a rich heritage of painting activity, with families or groups of painters working for the royal house or members of high nobility.

We know that, as with miniature painting, designs that originated decades, sometimes centuries ago, were passed down from one generation of artists to the next. And so it is with the decoration of this teak box. The influence of Kishangarh School of Painting has been suggested to us, and certainly worthy of further investigation.

And such is the construction and relative condition of the box, we would suggests it dates to the 20th century. A rare artefact from that magical place that is Rajasthan's Thar desert.
