A particularly large , antique Indian painting, stabalised gouache on canvas. Classical subject matter: Durga slaying the buffalo demon, Mahishasur. Currently loosely laid down on.

Is very much in the Indian tradition, in which generation after generation of painters recreate images that have gone before with, no doubt, Indian minatures being used as inspiration in this respect. In sharp contrast to the precision celebrated in Indian minature painting, there is a looser, though still highly detailed, approach to the application of the gouache on the woven canvas here. Nevertheless, they both share familiar subject matter, a clarity of vision and use of rich colours. Indian paintings celebrate all things.

In their choice of subject matter. Familiar themes being scenes from. Ramayana or the Bhagavata Purna. Here the wrathful form of. Parvati, the Hindu goddess Durga, is seen slaying the buffalo demon Mahishasur.

He as known for his deception, someone who pushed his evil ways by morphing into different forms. She is represented in ten-arm form , each holding various weapons and auspicious symbols.

Mahishasur with his sword drawn is thwarted by Durga who thrusts her trident into him in self defence, killing him instantly, an act that earned her the title Mahishamardini , one who killed the demon Mahisha. This victory is celebrated throughout India during the Dashain or Durga festival where hundreds of goats and buffaloes are sacrificed to commemorate the event.

There is a little wear to the bottom edge of the canvas, commensurate with its antique status. This painting will be carefully dispatched with the hardboard backing for protection.
