Antique Pueblo Indian Pottery TWO Moccasins Cochiti Santa Clara Vintage Indian

  

From a Tucson, Arizona collector's estate. Two antique Pueblo Indian pottery moccasins. The black moccasin is from Santa Clara pueblo. The larger polychrome moc is from Cochiti Pueblo.

Tourists have always been fascinated with pueblo pottery, but the large, traditional bowls and jars that were in use in the pueblos in the late 19th century were too cumbersome to travel with, so the Pueblo potters began making small souvenir pieces. Pottery moccasins filled this need. They were made at several of the Pueblos in the late 1800s and early 1900s, following the arrival of the train on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1879. The small black Santa Clara moccasin is in very good condition. It's a little over 3 inches in length and about 1¾ inch high. The larger Cochiti moccasin is 4½ inches long and about 3 inches high. There is a small rim chip at the front and some scratches along one side and at the heel.

There is some adhesive residue on the bottom from some tape. We bring you the old, the unusual, the eclectic, and rare from southern Arizona estates. My other items for sale.
