A rare, Indian Chakki griding table in teak and iron. This example has been enhanced with iron banding and studs, decorative ironwork to three of the legs and delightful carving.
A particularly fine example, likely to have been the property of a better off family, hence the enhanced decorative work. Chakki, or grinding tables, would have carried two heavy circular grinding stones and been used as a flour mill. The upper cylinder rotating on the fixed lower cylinder to grind wheat into flour, legumes, dal, fresh roasted spices and the like. Once the grain had been separated from the husk, a small side door was opened and the grain collected. In this table the door is fully operational. Chakkis are now increasingly used as coffee tables, magazine racks, display cabinets under glass , ottomans and the like. Even an elaborate bed for a pet.
