A RARE, PARTICULARLY LARGE, ANTIQUE INDIAN CHAKKI OR GRINDER TABLE. MADE IN THE TROPICAL HARDWOOD, TEAK, WITH ELEGANT HAND-CARVED DECORATATION. THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE CYLINDER IS DECORATED WITH A PARALLEL RIBBED. PATTERN, ITS UPPER SURFACE STUDDED AND SECURED WITH IRON CORNER BRACKETS ABOVE EACH LEG. A REAL DECORATOR'S STATEMENT PIECE, DISPLAYING A WONDERFUL PATINA.

In its previous incarnation this Chakki, or grinding table, would have carried the weight of two heavy circular grinding stones and been used as a home, do-it-yourself, flour mill. The upper cylinder rotating on the fixed lower cylinder to grind wheat into flour, legumes, dal, fresh roasted spices and the like. Actual grinding stones in an architectural salvage yard in the Thar desert are shown in the last two images. NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING. Once the grain had been separated from the husk, a small hinged side door was opened and the grain collected. Pre-electricity , every household in the subcontinent had a Chakki , with the women of the house traditionally manning the cylinders. In larger examples, livestock were used to rotate the top cylinder. This particular Chakki, having been constructed from the tropical hardwood teak , and intricately decorated, would have graced a high class Brahmin household.

Cut to the 21st century. In contemporary environments, Chakkis are increasingly repurposed as coffee tables, magazine racks, display cabinets, plant stands, ottomans and the like. Even an elaborate bed for a cat or dog.
