Strategically placed, this increased the speed of the airflow and acted as ancient form of air conditioning , often passing over running perfumed water in marble gullies.

Here endeth the physics lesson... Here's Jali for the rest of us. These exquisite early 19th century versions in Indian sandstone have been reclaimed from the same architectural salvage project in the blue city of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, with remants of cobalt blue to the surface to prove it. In their previous incarnation, they would have graced the exterior of a haveli, or grand mansion, and been an intergral part of the fabric of the building.

Today, they will add a touch of Bombay chic to any contemporary interior when displayed as a piece of art, in much the same way one hangs a picture. Or, lent up against a alcove wall with tea or LED lights behind? Or perhaps mounted on a metal stand?

Jalis from this salvage project also look the part in a garden setting. Something we saw illustrated to good effect at the Hampton Court Flower Show last year. As is the norm, the reverse is more crudely carved. We also have three smaller jalis available from the same architectural salvage project.
